Companies that mass produce guitar pickups usually use machines to wind them.
This automated process allows for large quantities to be made daily. When
machines wind pickups, they use an even back and forth motion that evenly
and tightly distributes the windings. This process may produce a descent
sounding pickup, but can limit the pickups full potential. I am
going to unlock this potential in your pickups. |
| When a pickup is wound by hand, the random overlapping of the wire opens up the wrapping pattern giving the field a unique personality. This technique is called scatterwinding. The result is a clean, open tone that has soul, not like the tight pattern that machine winding produces dampening a pickups sonic potential. This is the process used in every Smit's Handwound Guitar Pickup. Each coil is hand/scatterwound, and for our humbuckers the bobbins are matched in pairs for a unique tone you can't get when using "mass produced" pickups. |

There is more........... With mass produced humbuckers, you get 2 closely matched coils that basically have the same output characteristics. Before fully automated machines were invented to wind these coils, humbuckers (vintage- 1950's) were handwound until the bobbins were full and that inconsistency resulted in 2 unmatched coils in any given pickup. In these humbuckers you get one coil with less output and brighter, and the other slightly hotter and darker. These differences allow important frequencies to stand out, whereas in matched coils, like frequencies can cancel each other out. The result is a fuller spectrum of tone from one pickup. Distinct treble and bass that is cleaner and clearer. Smit's Humbuckers are constructed this way with optimum tone in mind. |
| Along with our base models, custom orders are available from "Your Custom Shop". Being a player for almost 30 years, I am familiar with the quest for great tone. Any custom order will be tweaked to your taste, and if I don't get it the first time, send it back and I will make it "Right" free of charge. |
